The Institute for Complex Engineered Systems (ICES) is a strategic initiative for pursuing multidisciplinary research on Complex Systems both within the College of Engineering and across colleges at Carnegie Mellon. The ICES vision is "to develop enabling technologies and systems that seamlessly connect people with their physical and information environments."
To accomplish this vision, research within ICES is based on the following themes: connecting people to people through information; connecting computers to computers; and connecting computers to the world. Technical labs that support the above themes are, Advanced Infrastructure Systems, Computational Analysis of Social and Organizational Systems (CASOS), Engineering Design Research Center (EDRC), Embedded and Reliable Information Systems (ERIS), Lab for Interactive Computer Systems (LINCS), Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and Mechatronics, Tissue Engineering and Artificial Organs, Thermal Management and Packaging for High Power Electronics Systems.
ICES projects emphasize collaboration among industrial sponsors and ICES faculty and students to enhance and accomplish technology transition. In addition, ICES faculty has developed novel courses that include industry sponsored projects in order to bring together real-world issues to the classroom and cutting edge solutions to industry while accomplishing the education mission.
The College of Engineering created ICES in February 1997 from the infrastructure of the Engineering Design Research Center (EDRC), an NSF Engineering Research Center established in 1986. Projects within ICES involve more than 130 faculty, staff, and graduate and undergraduate students from seven different colleges within CMU. Research within ICES is supported by internal investments from the office of the Provost and Dean of Engineering, Federal Agencies, the State of Pennsylvania, and Industry.
